Monstera Adansonii Plant Care
This plant is full of wicked fenestrations and yet another work of art to have indoors. Monstera Adansonii is a rather simple plant to care for and it’s a joy to watch it grow!
Plus, this is a versatile plant that you can choose to hang from the ceiling or stake up. You might notice that if you have a Monkey Mask growing upwards with the help of a moss pole or something similar, your plant will develop larger leaves; while when training, the foliage will gradually become smaller.
Monstera adansonii (a.k.a. Monkey Mask, Swiss cheese plant, Adanson’s monstera, friedrichsthalii, five holes plant). Its variegated variety is called Monstera adansonii ‘Archipelago’.
South and Central America.
We like to keep Monstera Adansonii in an indirect sunlight position, where it still gets a nice amount of ambient light, without having the chance of burning.
This plant is sensitive to high light and tolerant of lower light situations. But be aware that if it doesn’t get the right lighting conditions, it will start to grow leggy and much slower.
Room temperature would be ideal for these, and they won’t appreciate any cold drafts.
Water & Humidity:
We let this plant go dry! But once we do water it, we make sure it is soaked all the way. Our Monkey Mask plant is still rather small and we do have it in a terracotta pot, so we find that it dries out extremely fast. And we must admit it might be a little neglected sometimes, but still… doing perfectly well!!
When it comes to humidity, that’s key and they love it! However, if you are not able to provide this plant with the humidity it needs, you might need to compensate through the watering, keeping the soil slightly moist at all times, but never soggy.
Growth & Fertilizing:
This is a reasonably nice grower and therefore, you do want to provide it with some extra food throughout the growing season. Once every couple of weeks would be appropriate for this plant. Do make sure to stop throughout the cooler months.
If you have your Monstera Adansonii in a hanging basket, it is pretty easy to cut it back and propagate it. Besides promoting new growth from the chopped area, you can then stick your rooted cuttings back at the base of the pot to have a bushier plant.
Simply find a healthy and long stem on your Adansonii and cut it by the nodes (those are the thicker parts of the stems from where roots will form). Separate each node by cutting the stem on either side and stick those in water until roots come out.
Please make sure you do have at least one leaf per cutting so that it can photosensitize. And do refresh the water on the propagation vessel frequently.
If you propagate your Swiss Cheese directly into soil, make sure you place the cuttings facing down (the bottom of the stems towards the bottom of the pot) into the soil, and keep it moist for a while.
